What is Prostate Cancer?Prostate cancer is a cancer that affects the prostate, which is part of the male reproductive system. As such, it only affects men and not women. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers. It is the most common cancer in the United States, and the second most common cancer in the UK. This form of cancer usually affects men over the age of 50. Prostate cancer typically grows slowly. In fact, autopsy studies have shown that many elder men who passed away due to another cause had prostate cancer, but neither they nor their doctors even knew about it. Early stages of prostate cancer have little or no symptoms. If left untreated, however, prostate cancer can advance into nearby organs, and eventually into distant organs of the body (metastasis). Prostate Cancer Survival RateThe 5-year relative survival rate for ovarian cancer in the US is 98.9%, according to the National Cancer Institute. Copyright 2008 cancer-resource.net.
